THE NEIGHBORHOOD NOTEBOOK / 05

Scottsdale.
Get your bearings.

Old Town to open desert.
More than one way to feel at home.

A place is more than its listings. Here’s a first look at the streets, the stops and the practical details worth knowing before you make a move.

IN THIS GUIDE

01 / START HERE

A sense of place.

Old Town shops, galleries and gathering places, plus stops farther north. Old Town pins use the larger inset; all locations are schematic.

Illustrated orientation map of Scottsdale. Areas, roads and pins are schematic and approximate.

What does this map cover?

Scottsdale is a city, not one neighborhood. This schematic separates Old Town, the central corridor and the northern desert for orientation. The shaded zones are illustrative and do not trace municipal, subdivision or school boundaries.

The Old Town inset expands the dining cluster so you can actually select its pins. It uses a different scale from the overview. Use the city’s maps to check jurisdiction and property context; then narrow your housing search to a particular community.

02 / AROUND THE CORNER

A few places
to start.

Coffee, galleries, architecture, shopping and a little time outside. A short editorial shortlist, including nearby stops, rather than a ranking. Check each venue for current hours and menus.

03 / THE HOMES

Character.
And context.

An Old Town condominium, a central Scottsdale ranch and a north Scottsdale home can have little in common beyond the mailing address. Start with the setting and the ownership details.

These are citywide figures across all home types, not a price guide for Old Town, a particular golf community or north Scottsdale. A median is the middle sale, not an average or an appraisal. Narrow the geography and property type before using comparable sales.

04 / DO YOUR HOMEWORK

Schools, by address.

Scottsdale addresses span more than one school district. Scottsdale Unified and Paradise Valley Unified are two starting points; check the serving district and school assignment for the exact home and school year.

START WITH THE DISTRICT

Check the actual address.

Use the official resources for each school level. Confirm attendance and enrollment with the district.

Use official district resources to move from a city name to the right school information. A Scottsdale mailing address alone does not establish jurisdiction or attendance.

05 / LOOK A LITTLE CLOSER

Beyond the brochure.

A few practical questions to take with you when you explore Scottsdale.

01.

Choose the part of Scottsdale first.

Try your real daily routes. Access to Old Town, the freeway, a trailhead or your workplace can matter more than a listing’s use of “Scottsdale.”

02.

Read the community rules.

Check association dues, reserve information, rental rules and any membership arrangements. A golf-course view does not establish club access.

03.

Look at the desert setting closely.

Ask about drainage, outdoor maintenance, shade and the orientation of the home. Visit at the time of day you expect to use the patio.

ONE MORE THING FOR THE NOTEBOOK

Two different kinds of outside.

Chaparral Park offers an urban park setting; Gateway opens onto the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Check the city’s current trail guidance and conditions before setting out.
